Covestro introduced Desmodur ClimateValue (CV) on 23 September 2026, a polymeric MDI grade whose product carbon footprint is about 25% lower than that of comparable standard Desmodur grades. The company names polyurethane insulation boards, metal faced sandwich panels for buildings and refrigeration appliances as the target applications.
According to Covestro, the reduction comes from renewable energy, process innovation, efficiency gains and decarbonisation across the supply chain. The footprint is calculated from cradle to gate with a life cycle assessment method certified by TÜV Rheinland, following ISO 14040, ISO 14044, ISO 14067 and version 3.0 of the Together for Sustainability PCF Guideline.
Covestro says the grade can replace standard grades without reformulation or changes to production equipment, and that it is available now to pMDI customers in Europe, supplied from its German plants. Bernd Hennig, who heads Covestro's MDI trading cluster for EMLA, called it "a commercially available pMDI that immediately reduces Scope 3 emissions for our customers".
Sandwich panels, insulation boards and appliances are the core uses of rigid polyurethane foam. As panel and appliance makers face more questions about the carbon in their products, lower footprint MDI gives system houses a way to cut the footprint of their systems without changing how the foam is processed.
