Turkish chemical exports reach $22.8 billion in eight months; İKMİB holds $35 billion target

Türkiye's chemical sector exported $22.8 billion in the first eight months of 2026, 4.6% more than in the same period a year earlier, according to İKMİB figures reported by Ekonomim on 8 September 2026. The first half accounted for $17.1 billion, described as the highest January-to-June chemical export figure in the sector's history, and August alone added $2.7 billion, according to Türkiye Gazetesi's report of the same announcement. The association is keeping its $35 billion target for the full year and is working toward $55 billion by 2029 in line with Türkiye's Medium-Term Programme. Growth is not coming from the traditional EU core: Spain, Malta and Morocco all posted large percentage gains.

The $22.8 billion covers January to August and compares with $21.7 billion in the same months of 2025. The 4.6% increase is a sector-wide average across a very broad heading: Turkish chemical exports run from plastics and paints through construction chemicals and insulation materials to cleaning products, and polyurethane systems are not reported as a separate line. For a system house the figure is therefore a benchmark against which to measure its own year, not a reading of demand.

Ekonomim's own report carries no country-by-country breakdown. Fuar Dergisi, covering the same İKMİB announcement on the same day, put the leading destinations for January to August at Spain with $1.27 billion, Italy with $1.26 billion, the United States with $1.04 billion and Germany with $966 million. The same report gives the fastest-growing markets in percentage terms as Malta at 163%, Morocco at 129%, Spain at 47% and the United States at roughly 34%. The volume still sits in Europe; the momentum has moved to the Mediterranean and North Africa.

İKMİB chairman Vefa İbrahim Aracı, quoted by Fuar Dergisi, described the chemical industry as one of the core sectors that will support Syria's economic transformation and reconstruction. The same coverage lists the product groups reconstruction is expected to require as plastics, paints, construction chemicals, insulation, and cleaning and hygiene products, with no tonnage or value attached to any of them. On the longer horizon Aracı told Ekonomim that İKMİB is targeting $55 billion of exports in 2029 under the Medium-Term Programme.

For a rigid systems producer, or a panel maker buying systems, three things are worth separating out of this. The headline growth rate is single digit, so a Turkish chemical exporter running ahead of 4.6% this year is outperforming the sector rather than riding it. The triple-digit gains sit in small markets where a handful of shipments move the percentage, which makes them a map of where exporters are pushing rather than of where the volume is. And insulation appears by name in the Syria list with no figure beside it, so the demand widely expected there remains an expectation rather than a measured number.
